in the early 1960s, when the capital of
brazil moved to brasília ownership of the island shifted
to the state of guanabara.
and in the early 1970s, when the state of
guanabara merged with the state of rio de janeiro, brocoió
moved into its present role as summer home for the governor.
today, due to its significance to cariocas of
african ancestry, the notoriety of
ilha de brocoió continues - and though it may be overshadowed in size
by its neighbor paquetá, it remains equal in legend.
