at a glance

in the early 1960s, when the capital of brazil moved to brasília  ownership of the island shifted to the state of guanabara.

and in the early 1970s, when the state of guanabara merged with the state of rio de janeiro,  brocoió moved into its present role as summer home for the governor.

today, due to its significance to cariocas of african ancestry, the notoriety of ilha de brocoió continues - and though it may be overshadowed in size by its neighbor paquetá, it remains equal in legend.    arrow-back      arrow-forward
