at a glance

a type of tango was invented that is completely unique to rio de janeiro - maxixe originated in 1868, influenced by afro-brazilian and european dances - lundu and polka, respectively.

the late brazilian musician, ernesto nazareth - who died in 1934 - was born in rio de janeiro and for an unknown reason, self-labelled his music 'brazilian tangos' as opposed to maxixe.

he was a classically trained musician and excelled as a pianist and composer. in total he composed 88 different tangos - not to mention 41 waltzes, 28 polkas and many sambas, gallops and foxtrots - many of which are still played today in milongas scattered across rio de janeiro.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
