at a glance

it might surprise many to hear the words 'brazilian tango' given the common conception is that genre is exclusively argentine - however, tango was played and composed in rio de janeiro around the same time it started making waves in buenos aires.

tango, a style of ball room dancing, came about as a result of argentina and uruguay's european immigrant population, who brought the unique dance to south america, but the genre is hugely popular in rio de janeiro and has deep-set roots in the city's history.

even after the emergence of rock and roll in the 1960s, tango remained popular in the city - the rhythm, melody and poetry of the music drifted up the atlantic coast from buenos aires to be embraced by cariocas.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
