at a glance

also in botafogo is the home of rui barbosa, a neo-classical museum dedicated to the life and work of rui barbosa de oliveira,  one of the brightest intellectuals of his time - he was one of the organizers of the republic and co-author of the constitution of the first republic with prudente de morais.

an influential political figure that fought for abolition of slavery in the 19th century, he lived in the estate, that is today the museum, from 1895 to 1923.

this museum archives over 35,000 volumes of rui's old books and documents, telling the story of brazil's origin.

the building, library, and garden were turned over in 1924 to the ministry of culture which opened the museum to the public in 1930 - ever since, researchers, professors and intellectuals come from all over the world to examine barbosa's work - the house and garden are preserved in the manner that rui left them.             arrow-back      arrow-forward
