It was inaugurated in 1810, at the time when the Portuguese Court of Rio was invaded by the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte, however, it was only opened to the public in 1814.

It is the oldest Brazilian institution, and combines features and styles of eclectic and neoclassical architecture, including great mounted frames, large halls, an atrium, pillars, winding staircases, and balconies - It is possible to arrange guided tours of the establishment to see its rare collections and artifacts.
