called 'centro' the historical center of rio de janeiro is home to one of the most unique and beautiful districts of the entire city. cobblestone streets, churches, cultural centers, libraries, museums, and hidden corners all come together to offer a spectacular perspective of the city to any visitor.

centro is portuguese for 'center' which is exactly what the neighborhood is supposed to be. it is, above all, the prime historical neighborhood of rio de janeiro. it shares a common history with the rest of zona central (central zone). nestled against the waters of guanabara bay in its eastern edge it is surrounded by the neighborhoods of saúde, gamboa, santo cristo, cidade nova, catumbi, santa teresa, lapa, and glória.
