at a glance

in spite of being widely known as the fátima neighborhood, (bairro de fátima) this area is not in fact an official neighborhood, but rather a unique part of the centro jurisdiction, that has established its own identity. located at the base of santa teresa, this neighborhood has easy access to glória, catete, flamengo, and tijuca.

the name of this area comes from the our lady of fátima avenue (avenida nossa senhora da fátima), which comprises the core of the sub-neighborhood and unites the rua riachuelo, in the north, to the president aguirre cerda square (praça presidente aguirre cerda) to the south.

it was originally created in 1935 when a group of portuguese refugees, trying to escape the dictatorial regime of antónio oliveira de salazar, arrived in rio de janeiro and occupied territory in the centre of the city.     arrow-back      arrow-forward
