the 20th century also brought the urban development that would shape the district in its current form. by the middle of the century, after the relative abandonment of the district the neighborhood found find a new life as the economical center of the city - once again it became a unique commercial area filled with cultural, historical, and turistic hotspots. in centro, a visitor will find many points of interest - some representing invaluable monuments to both brazil and rio de janeiro. the neighborhood also holds one of the main entrances into the city, the Santo Dumont airport, on its eastern edge.
