the 'carioca' nickname for metropolitan rio de janeiro inhabitants has its origin in a small white house that was built by the first european settlers on what today is flamengo beach - the colonizers dropped anchor and establish their settlement at the mouth of a nearby river, due to the fresh drinking water that was available here.

the river, no longer in existence, met the sea at what is now called flamengo beach (praia do flamengo, and the site became a stop off point where ships would restock with clean drinking water and supplies.
