at a glance

one of the most famous churches in rio de janeiro, the imperial irmandade de nossa senhora da glória do outeiro, simply called igreja glória do outeiro, sits on top of a hill clearly visible form the glória neighborhood, home to the monument to the fallen of the world war, and the modern art museum.

originally a small chapel, built in 1670 by antónio caminha, it stands in a prominent position visible by navigators reaching the bay, and clearly indicating the profile of the city of rio de janeiro.

the small chapel was eventually replaced by a white temple, built on land donated by claudio gurgel do amaral, and that took a long time to complete, from 1714 to 1739, coinciding with the founding of the brotherhood of nossa senhora da glória do outeiro.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
