at a glance

not only does the gay crowd likes this stretch of sand, but many international high-profile visitors have been spotted here, perhaps due to the particularly beautiful patrons and the never ending mood for a party on the beach.

right in this area, across from rua farme de amoedo, between 1971 and 1973, ipanema posto 8 was home to a pier that stretched into the ocean, creating the biggest waves ever seen in this stretch of the coast - even bigger waves than along the pedra do arpoador.

today the spot is demarked by a viewpoint and remembered with nostalgia by many surfers of the time.

before then, in 1906, posto 8 by rua gomes carneiro was home to a famous duel between senator pinheiro machado and edmundo bittencourt, the editor in chief of the newspaper correio da manha (the morning paper).  arrow-back      arrow-forward
