at a glance

Palácio Guanabara (guanabara palace) was first constructed in 1853 as a neo-classical property, and remained a private residence until 1860 - In 1865 it was purchased by the Government to be the residence of the newlyweds, Princess Isabel and Count D'Eu, and was renamed Paço Isabel, or 'Isabel Palace'.

The palace remained the property of the princess until the proclamation of the Republic in 1889, at which time it was confiscated by the military government - In 1922 it was home to King Albert of Belgium, and in 1960 it was transferred to the seat of the Government of the State of Rio, the function which it retains today; the Governor himself lives in Laranjeiras Place, situated close by in the same neighborhood.     arrow-back      arrow-forward
