at a glance

Mercado Săo José - St. Joseph Market, tucked away on the main road of Laranjeiras, brings together a wealth of art, culture and culinary delights.
The endearing white and blue building, reminiscent of simple Portuguese architecture, contains 16 kiosks selling a vast array of typical international foods, including Japanese, Italian and Brazilian, as well as bars, a crafts store, a poultry shop, a music studio and a visual arts studio.

The building was once the barn attached to a farm located in Parque Guinle, and previously served as slave quarters during the time of the Empire. The barn was redeveloped to house the kiosks in 1942 when Getúlio Vargas decided to transform it into a market to supply the people of the region with cheap goods during the war. arrow-back      arrow-forward
