at a glance

Palácio Laranjeiras (laranjeiras palace) was Built between 1909 and 1913 and is the former residence of the Guinle family, one of the most affluent and influential families of the first decades of the 20th Century - following the death of the patriarch Eduardo Guinle in 1941, the family began to sell the estate to the federal government and in 1947 President Dutra acquired the property in order to host distinguished visitors and Heads of State.

It was used as the official residence of President Juscelino Kubitschek, as he was unwilling to stay in Palácio do Catete, or 'Catete Palace', after the suicide of Getúlio Vargas in 1954 - In 1960 the Palace passed to being the Guanabara State Government residency and in the year of 1969 the military junta used the palace as the seat of Federal Government until the State merged with Rio in 1975. arrow-back      arrow-forward
