at a glance

the Forte de Duque de caxias (Duque de caxias Fort), is an architectural artifact of great historical significance, situated at a privileged height atop morro do leme, or 'Leme Mountain' - because of this, it is normally called forte do leme.

From the top of the Mountain one can take in wonderful views of the rich landscape, including copacabana beach, the start of guanabara bay, the many islands in the bay and in the ocean, the Forts of niterói and Rio de Janeiro, pedra da gávea, christ the redeemer monument, the iconic morro dois irmãos, or 'Two Brothers Hill', and pão de açúcar (sugar loaf mountain).

The Fort was the focal point of a number of seminal historical moments, including uprisings at copacabana fort in 1922, the Revolta do Encouraçado São Paulo, or 'Revolt of the São Paulo Battleship' in 1924, a Communist Conspiracy in 1935, and was a key strategic location during the Second World War. arrow-back      arrow-forward
