at a glance

the new facility was built in the baroque style of architecture popular in the eighteenth century - one of its many features is its unique entrance gallery (galilé) with three arches.

an entrance gallery is usually located before the main door, and  another important architectural feature is the carved medallion on the church's façade.

the medallion was discovered during renovations to the building in the mid nineteenth century, and possibly destined to be installed in another church belonging to the same order - the igreja da ordem terceira da penitência.

carved in lioz, a type of limestone found in portugal, it depicts the coronation of the virgin mary, and it was installed on the facade where it has been ever since.  arrow-back      arrow-forward
