at a glance

the emergency of a variety of social problems, including crime, led the authorities to take action and  start a revitalization of the central neighborhoods.

this region was renovated during the 1970s - new public buildings such as the prédio da empresa brasileira de correios telégrafos (brazilian telegraph building) and, the centro administrativo são sebastião (são sebastião administrative center - cass) for the prefeitura da cidade (city hall) were erected here.

by the end of the 20th century several areas, were demolished, redesigned,  and used for the construction of new commercial and residential buildings. the most important of these buildings would be the nearby sambódromo, located in the eastern frontier of the neighborhood, just before the historical center of the city.
