at a glance

the first main street to be built in the area was called estrada do catumbi, nowadays called rua itapiru, a long street that stretched past a number of large farms and homesteads - the longest street in rio comprido was known as rua da bela vista, or the street with a beautiful view, where the home of marechal francisco cabral da silva, the baron of itapagipe, was located and that street was later renamed after him following his death.

one of the marking points on this street was the mansion of the conde de bonfim, which was demolished in the twentieth century to make way for the construction of a hospital.

with the inauguration of the rebouças tunnel in 1967, this neighborhood became mainly a passage between the zona norte (north zone) and the zona sul (south zone) of the city, and the distinguished residents of the area left migrated to other parts of town.   arrow-back      arrow-forward
