muda da tijuca is a small sub-district part of the tijuca neighborhood - one of the best known and most important neighborhoods in rio de janeiro.

located in the zona norte, this once a large wetland covered in jungle and water ponds, since the arrival of the portuguese it was used by the jesuit priests and then by a series of smaller proprietors after their expulsion.

 the extensive exploitation of the land devastated the ancient jungles, prompting the emperor of brazil, dom pedro ii, to order for the replanting of much of the tijuca jungles - still, large areas remained occupied, and eventually they were used to expand the urbanization of rio de janeiro.
