at a glance

today the neighborhood of tijuca comprises a wide area of buildings intertwined with large green squares, commercial, and historical edifices - such wide variety of spaces and the sheer size of the official districts resulted in the birth of the so-called sub-neighborhoods.

albeit for the most part not sanctioned in official terms, these spaces remain an important way of making sense of the geography of large areas in rio de janeiro.

muda de tijuca is one of those non-official neighborhoods, roughly located in the center of the wider administrative region - its name can be translated to english as 'change of tijuca' and it is said that this name derives from the fact that in the past travelers stopped in the area to change the horseshoes of their rides. arrow-back     arrow-forward
