Proletário do Dique, which translates as 'Dam's Proletariat', is a large community located at the northern tip of the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. While the neighborhood of Jardim América is for the most part a result of successful urbanization processes which took place in the 1950s, the surrounding communities do not enjoy the same quality and organization of infrastructure.

They started to grow along the shores of the Rio Meriti, or 'Meriti River' in the 1960s, building over wet grounds just shy of the mangrove - The first inhabitants established small farms, producing fruit and vegetables.
