the pool, composed of filtered seawater, was built for favela dwellers in rio de janeiro who, because of distance and logistics, had difficult access to the city famous and posh beaches like ipanema and copacabana.

piscinão de ramos was opened by the state government in 2001, and has become an important landmark in the area.
