 entering many favelas today is much more safer than before - yet, it is important to be aware that the communities still present many environmental factors that can be potentially harmful, which are also visible in many parts of the world.

while the common perception of hazards in favelas stem from violent acts committed by organized criminals, in reality, common and probable perils are environmental - some components are due to the up-hill geography of these communities, others because of the tropical climate, but all must be addressed before planning a visit into a community.
