the igreja nossa senhora da conceição (imperial chapel our lady of conception), located in praia da bica, is one of the oldest buildings in the jardim guanabara neighborhood on the ilha do governador. originally built on a farm, the construction of this historic building began in 1625 and finished in 1662.

in 1786 the chapel was donated to the archdioceseof são sebastião do rio de janeiro. then in 1816 it was renovated and the building expanded. the chapel was reconstructed again in the twentieth century, producing the beautiful building as it can be seen today - the altar, which is thought to have been made from german raw materials, was transported by ship from germany.
