the church of igreja matriz senhor bom jesus do monte, the principle church in the catholic parish of paquetá and an important landmark on ilha de paquetá, was founded in 1763. built on the grounds of a local landlord on the south side of the island, the land was donated to the church on the condition that it became a local parish representing paquetá, distinguished to the neighboring town of magé. this division however just lasted a few years.

the church was renovated in 1900, resulting in neo-gothic style interior. it has an active parish which is very involved in community events and in hosting visitors. missionaries from the congregation and members of the archdiocese of rio de janeiro aim to engage the community through educational workshops and events - the church is located at praia dos tamoios, 45, ilha de patquetá, rio de janeiro. more information is available on this website.
