at a glance

Horto de Mágoas (Garden of Suffering) by Gonzaga Duque is A storybook whose first and only edition dates back to 1914. It is part of the literary movement, often overlooked for not giving enough emphasis to nationalism and history - Symbolism. Visuality plays a prominent role in Gonzaga Duque's stories, always looking through memory, and through imagination; a nostalgic search for a situation already experienced and just remembered.

To the symbolists, reason is insufficient and looking back demands that we return to a place where the meaning of existence is mysterious, a world that modern reason desecrated. Thus, these tales are a refusal to trivialize the workings of common sense, pursuing the puzzle and the dream, guided by the imagination. arrow-back     arrow-forward
