Crônicas do Rio (Chronicles of Rio) by Raul Pompéia is part of The Coleção Biblioteca Carioca (Carioca Library Collection), which depicts the history of this megalopolis through the texts of writers who were born or lived within it. In this book, the author of O Ateneu (The Athenaeum) relays the city's daily life: politics, the antics of the rulers, crimes, social and cultural activities, the opera house, dances, songs, folk festivals and finally, life in court.

They are flavorful chronicles that reveal Pompéia as a keen observer and interpreter of aspects of Rio life at the height of its urban effervescence, preoccupied at that time with the struggles for the emancipation of the slaves and from republican rule. arrow-back     arrow-forward
