the fifth international military world games took place in rio de janeiro in 2011 from july 15 - 24 with the city welcoming nearly 5,000 athletes from over 100 countries.

20 different sports were on show including football, sailing, and swimming. beach volleyball also featured on copacabana beach for the first time in the games' history.

the games, also dubbed 'the peace games' and the third largest sporting event in the world, are specifically for military sportsmen and women and organized by the international military sports council (cism).
