along with many other parts of rio, the botafogo area experienced rapid development during the 19th century,   boosted by the fact that the princess carlota joaquina spent several seasons on her nearby ranch.

this brought new attention to the beach on the botafogo bay, resulting in the construction of the gardens of the beria-mar avenue, around the edge of the beach.   in the early 20th century,  it came to be one of the best know locations of rio de janeiro, and so it remained to the modern days.
