one of the most beautiful and famous parks in rio, flamengo park is better known as the 'aterro', which literally translated means embankment. the park covers around 300 acres of beautiful urban space, providing a welcome contrast the confines of the city.

designed by the affluent architect, lota macedo soares, the park was made from the rubble of santo antónio hill in centro, which was destroyed. the rock was used to fill in the edge of the bay where the aterro currently resides.
