a city project is now underway to expand the pier further into the sea, and to build a restaurant and a mirante on the tip of the new pier, called quebra mar de barra.   a video about this planned construction can be seen on this page.      

visitors can reach quebra mar de barra pier easily from the canal de joatinga or from barra beach. the best way of getting to barra beach is via bus or taxi, normally a 45 reals ride from ipanema or copacabana.
