at a glance

five years after its inauguration, another fort was built on the top of the hill, named as forte de são luiz. working in tandem for many years, the two were eventually joined, in 1891, making a formidable bastille on the edge of the city.

the complex ceased operations in the mid-twentieth century, yet the structures remain in tact, due to preservation efforts. the forte do pico stands as a grand stone structure, with high walls and imposing watchtowers, which are now immersed in overgrown and flush native vegetation.

to arrive at the fort, visitors can elect to take a light stroll up the morro do pico, which is a pleasure in itself, with tropical rainforest lining the paths. upon reaching the historical structure, visitors are met by two magnificent gates, whilst inside a maze of archaic tunnels, event halls, and galleries await.arrow-back     arrow-forward
