the museu do açude is part of the castro maya foundation, inaugurated in 1964 by raymundo ottoni de castro - castro was a brazilian industrialist, who became an art aficionado and began a collection which quickly became one of the largest in the country.

the açude museum holds thousands of his possessions including furniture, rugs, sculptures, ceramic tiles, china and silverware from all over the world.
