created in 1922, the museu histórico nacional, is one of brazil's most important museums. it has a long-term exhibition circuit that covers themes from prehistory to the modern brazilian republic - the goal of the museum is to preserve and define the history and culture of brazil. it holds nearly 280,000 items including latin america's biggest collection of numismatics.
