praia de piratininga is the first of the large oceanic beaches in niterói. also called praiăo (big beach) because of its size, piratininga is an indigenous word meaning 'drying fish' - in fact, this area is rich in fish and proud fishermen who show their fish on the beach and routinely sell it to restaurant owners and beachgoers alike.
located in the neighborhood by the same name, piratininga beach is nearly 3 km long, a size similar to copacabana beach or ipanema and leblon beaches combined - this is a shore of beautiful waters, fine white sands, and a great view of rio de janeiro's landscape.
