the park is located on the east coast of the state, east of the city of rio de janeiro, and spanning a total area of approximately 10,000 hectares, across six of the states municipalities - araruama, armação dos búzios, arraial do cabo, cabo frio, saquarema, and são pedro da aldeia.

the park is separated into four main sectors, and hosts an incredible array of natural wonders, making it one of the most diverse and colorful areas in the state. as well as the native forest, the golden beaches, and expansive mountains, the park also consists of shimmering lakes and deep lagoons, salt marshes, coastal islands, and rocky shores.
