the national park known as parque estadual do desengano is the oldest state wildlife conservation area in rio de janeiro, and makes up the northern fluminense area, covering the municipalities of santa maria madalena in the serrana region, and campos dos goytacazes and são fidelis, both in the northern fluminense part of the state.

covering approximately 22 hectares, the park constitutes the remaining amplitude of the atlantic forest, and derives its name from the pedra do desengano, the region's highest point rising to 1,761 meters.
