it was established in an attempt to preserve the natural resources and wildlife of the island, whilst encouraging sustainable tourism and leisure, to maintain a steady economy in the surrounding region.

more than 90 percent of the parque estadual da ilha grande is occupied by lush atlantic forest, which still houses much of its native flora and fauna, making it particularly rich with exotic ecosystems. 

one of the most popular species in the park is the howler monkey, commonly spotted in the forest thus making it the symbol of the park.
