it is adjacent to the reserva biológica da praia do sul, which also serves to protect a large portion of the ecosystems upon the island.   

the limits of the park include areas of intense ecological biodiversity, with a number of distinct ecosystems, including pristine coastal beaches, mysterious coastal lagoons, and dramatic rocky shores.

the park was established in 1990, and has played a major role in protecting the various local species of flora and fauna threatened by extinction, whilst also limiting human activity within the region.
