although officially established as a state park in 2013, the area in which the park falls was already considered an environmental protection area (apa) - however, the earlier category of protection was less stringent than officially being a state park.

almost as if collecting titles, unesco, also declared the area a biosphere reserve of the atlantic, in 1992, giving it global recognition for its geographical attributes.

one of the reasons for the change in classification of the park, was the existence of illegal mining and extraction of natural resources, and unregulated leisure activities, taking place in the region.
