the peak is worth a trip as it is one of the few remaining isolated points in rio de janeiro, due to its few existing access points and few paved roads that lead to the area. the main access road is via the office at pau da fome. pedra do hime is second highest, at 356 meters in altitude, also known as pedra do canino, or canine point. this point offers a number of climbing routes that vary in length and difficulty.

the park was officially established in 1974, with the intention of preserving the remaining flora and maintaining the delicate ecological biodiversity in the region, which includes the mata atlântica (atlantic rainforest). in addition, it is part of the parks mission - the preservation of the water sources that are threatened by urban expansion in the region.
