whereas people from  different socio-economic backgrounds tend to be geographically separated in other cities, the rich and the poor live in close proximity to each other in rio, and nearly all the neighborhoods in the city are home to one or more favela communities.

favelas are intricate and lively communities, cradles of some of the most famous aspects of carioca culture - much of brazil's popular music was born here, including samba and more recently funk carioca. almost all of the samba schools seen parading in the competitions during carnival have their roots in favelas.
