as of 2008, the government has initiated very successful programs to rid many favelasof drug traffickers, and installed a permanent police force to maintain security in many communities.

this has not only bettered the quality of life of favela residents, but made it possible for foreign visitors to get a glimpse into a precious part of rio, that was not accessible until just a few years back.
