swimmers and divers should exercise caution as the ocean can be treacherous at times and currents here can be quite strong. in fact, the name ipanema means 'bad / dangeous waters' in the language of the indigenous tupi-guarani, .  

hikers can take advantage of the proximity of pedra do arpoador, at the east end of the beach. this rock hides a small natural park on the side facing away from the beach, with plenty of spectacular view points. during the summer months, crowds gather both on this rock and at posto 9 to clap after each sunset. an atmosphere and experience not to be missed.
