arguably the most famous of these buildings is the palácio das laranjeiras.  built in the early twentieth century by a wealthy brazilian family, its classical french architectural style and massive size made it a landmark in the area ever since.

purchased by the federal government in 1947, it served in various state functions - first as guest house for foreign dignitaries while rio was still the capital of brazil, then later as the official residence of the governor, and it is now open to the public.
