originally founded in the eighteenth century, it was settled by wealthy familie, swho built the stately colonial-style mansions and other structures of similar design, which survive to this day and give santa teresa its signature charm.

one of these mansions - parque das ruinas, is now open to the public and a unique stage for art galleries, cultural events. it boasts tower complete with viewing platform, that offers a spectacular 360 degrees view of rio de janeiro. perhaps the most famous buildings is the convent of santa teresa - constructed around the time the community was established, it inspired the neighborhood's name.
