in fact, várzea and salinas are not even the only names ascribed to this particular beach - in the past, it was referred to as rio branco beach (praia do rio branco), in reference to a fort located nearby called forte do rio branco.

today a different beach inside the fort is officially called praia forte rio branco.

praia de salinas is not among the better known beaches in niterói, perhaps owing to the confusion surrounding its many names, and its propensity to stray from typical beach conditions.
