araribóia thought his face was sculpted in the pedra do índio, and thus chose that area as his land.  araribóia is considered the founder of the city of niterói, and he is still honored and remembered as such.  

also visible from icaraí beach is pedra de itapuca. this rock is named with a tupi-guarani indigenous word, meaning 'rock with a hole,' due to the original shape of the rock before it was changed.

the pedra de itapuca was originally connected to the shore via a natural arch of rock that was demolished in 1840 to make way for the seaside road leading to the neighborhood.  arrow-back     arrow-forward
