the praia grande landfill was established in
the mid 20th century, leaving just a small strip of sand at the
end of caminho niemeyer near the
federal fluminese university,
the
urban bus terminal, and the ferry docks.
the beach is mostly unknown even by locals,
but retains its name and status as a reminder of the history of
the beautiful city of
niterói.
this is not a beach that can be used as a
typical beach, it has no sporting infrastructure, lifeguards, or
public bathrooms as there normally are no people on it.
