the waste waters from parque royal, as well as from the numerous excavations, have polluted the area. the favela parque royal is located on flat land, with direct access to the water - it is bordered by a military base, the guanabara bay, and the highway. the area of praia gaegos is not accessible by land since it is located inside the military base, and separated by a wall from parque royal.
